Casa Batlló is to be found in Passeig de Gracia, in the centre of Barcelona.
The present Casa Batlló, is the result of a total refurbishment of an old conventional house built in 1877 owned by a Barcelonan Aristocrat. The lower levels were for the owner and the upper floors for renting.
Gaudí was commissioned by the owner Joseph Batlló to totally renovate the old building. On that basis Gaudí projected this astonishing house as one of the most individual and extraordinary houses of Barcelona, and it is now a museum.
Gaudí' s work activates your imagination and challenges you to ask questions, especially in this house. The changes made by Gaudí on the old building were radical. These changes included a gallery, the balconies and the polychrome ceramics.
Inside, the spaces were totally reorganized in order to catch more natural light, Gaudí also added two floors to the building. Outside, Gaudí carried out one of the most impressive and brilliant urban façades of the world. The local name for the building is Casa del Sossos (House of Bones), which is a true depiction of the exterior.
